Class of 2017 Plants Tree

Little Gem Magnolia Honors Their Accomplishments

Post Date:05/12/2017 8:34 AM

Members of the VHCC Class of 2017 came together the day before Commencement to plant a tree on campus to honor their accomplishments.

The little gem magnolia was planted in an open area behind the Learning Resource Center, following a tradition that began last year.  Horticulture Instructor Ben Casteel assisted students with the 60 pound tree and promised to nurture it after they have moved on to the next chapter of their lives.

President Gene C. Couch Jr. suggested the tradition last year, noting that it is an opportunity for students to leave their mark on campus - just as their time at VHCC has made a mark on each of them. He encouraged them to return to campus often and bring future generations of their families to see the tree that - like each of them - will continue to grow.
